PAI (Polyamide-Imide) Applications

PAI (polyamide-imide) is the highest-performance unfilled thermoplastic, retaining strength and dimensional stability near 250°C continuous. Teresi supplies PAI stock and machined parts for aerospace, semiconductor and precision wear duties.

Where PAI earns its place

When a metal part is too heavy or a normal engineering plastic melts, PAI fills the gap: jet-engine brackets, semiconductor clamps, valve seats and thrust washers running hot and loaded.

Key properties

High-temp strength

Retains load-bearing strength to ~250°C continuous.

Wear & creep

Excellent under load, low creep vs other thermoplastics.

Dimensional stability

Low thermal expansion, tight-tolerance parts.

Chemical

Good vs solvents, oils, fuels; limited vs strong bases.

Typical applications

FieldPAI parts
Aerospace / engineBushings, seals, brackets
SemiconductorClamps, fixtures, wafer-handling
IndustrialValve seats, thrust washers, gears
Oil & gasDownhole wear components

Machining notes

PAI is abrasive to tooling and usually post-cured; Teresi machines to drawing and can advise on grade and finishing.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature can PAI withstand?

About 250°C continuous, briefly higher — the highest of unfilled thermoplastics.

PAI vs PEEK — when to pick PAI?

Pick PAI when temperature, creep and wear under load beat PEEK; pick PEEK for broader chemical resistance and easier processing.

Is PAI machinable?

Yes, but it is hard and abrasive; use sharp carbide/PCD tooling and allow post-cure.
